Having strong healthy teeth is important for our child’s well-being. Proper oral care must begin as earlier as possible like the basic wiping of the baby’s gums with a clean piece of gauze.

When my baby’s tooth is about to come-out, I saw her uneasy feeling. She likes to bite her finger, murmuring something with a bit cry as if telling me that she is uncomfortable with what she has in her gums.

To lessen the discomfort, I gave her a teething toy chilled from the refrigerator. Biting the teething toy, gives her a relief. Sometimes, I rub her gums with a clean finger or a wet gauze.

So how to take care of your baby’s teeth?

Since my baby has few teeth already, I know that it will be prone to tooth decay if not taken cared properly.

The following notes are a guide to prevent baby’s tooth decay:

  1. The pacifier that my baby is using must be clean and without any trace of sweets.
  2. I only give her plain milk and water when I bottle feed. I do not put sweetened drinks on it.
  3. I brush her teeth according to the suitable brush on her stage. Note that you can see various kinds of brushing style specifically designed for your baby’s age and teeth stage. You can see this toothbrush in baby care section/department. Toothpaste is not necessary until the baby reach 2 years of age. Just a plain water and a specific brush will do.
  4. It is also advisable to visit a dentist for proper cleaning and a fluoride treatment every 6 months.
